Everything You Need to Know About Buying a Whole or Half Cow
How much beef will I get and how much freezer space do I need?
The general rule of thumb is one cubic foot of space for every 30 pounds of frozen beef.
Half Cow: approximately 160 pounds of meat cut and wrapped, so 6 cubic feet of freezer space is needed.
Whole Cow: approximately 320 pounds of meat cut and wrapped, so 13 cubic feet of freezer space is needed.
Do you sell by hanging weight?
Yes, we sell by hanging weight because our animals’ weights vary. The graphic (designed by my 13-year-old by the way) explains the difference between live weight, hanging weight, and the frozen weight you will receive.
The ratio between hanging weight and cut and wrapped is about 60%. So, if you’re half cow hangs at 284 pounds, you’ll get about 170 pounds of meat.
How much does a half or whole cow cost?
A half cow will cost you about $1800 and a whole cow $3400.
Now, how do we determine that cost?
When you buy a whole or half cow there are two costs. You pay us $5/# hanging weight, and you pay the butcher for processing. Processing for a full cow is roughly $800 and $400 for a half. This is just an estimate: the cost will depend on the hanging weight of the animal.
Since we’re raising Jersey/beef crosses, the hanging weight of our cows is a bit lighter than say a full bred Angus. We think this is a good thing; you can fill up your freezer without breaking the bank.
Can I choose my cuts and where do I pick up my beef?
In terms of cuts, buy a whole or half cow is like choosing your own adventure. You can have it cut any way you like, and we’ll be here every step of the way if you want some suggestions and/or help.
Most of our customers pick up their meat at Herring Brothers in Guildford, ME. They are open Monday-Friday from 8-4 (closed from 12:00-12:30). We will let you know when it’s ready. You have 14 days to pick up your meat. Beyond that, your Herring Brothers processing charge will begin to accrue interest.
We may also be able to work out a delivery for an extra charge. Just reach out if you want to discuss delivery options.
I will add that the trip to Herring Brothers is a perfect chance to do some Piscataquis Country sightseeing. Peaks Kenny State Park is pretty sweet!
Is buying a half or whole cow a good decision for me?
We understand that buying a half or whole cow is a big financial decision. We also believe that it isn’t the best decision for everyone.
For example, if the only beef you tend to buy and eat are rib eye steaks, then you’re apt to be surprised when you realize how few rib eyes there are on a half cow.
Because we’re raising dairy beef crosses, our cows are smaller than a purebred Angus or Hereford. Therefore, our cuts are going to be smaller and leaner in general.
And the truth of the matter is you’re going to get a lot of ground beef when you buy a half or whole cow.
But, if you’re excited about diving into new ground beef recipes, eager to explore some new cuts, and are a believer in organic, grass fed beef, you’re in the right place.
